Information Literacy Across the Curriculum GenEd Disciplines Psychology Department's IL plan

 

 

Department Goals:

Psychology majors will:
1. Develop a strong psychological knowledge base by being exposed to major theoretical perspectives, scientific methodology, and applied areas of study in psychology.
2. Develop an analytical and objective approach to the study of human behavior by emphasizing laboratory skills, research methods, and statistical methods to collect and analyze data.
3. Develop critical reasoning skills, problem-solving skills, and quantitative reasoning skills.
4. Develop adequate language skills to be able to read professional literature, understand research articles, write scientifically, and use appropriate APA style.
5. Develop effective information-gathering skills as shown by the use of library resources to conduct literature searches by utilizing online databases and other library reference materials.
6. Develop computer skills for gathering information, writing papers, analyzing data, and making professional presentations.
7. Develop an appreciation for the complexity of psychological knowledge and how it relates to historical, ethical, and cultural contexts.
8. Develop interpersonal skills, interpresonal awareness, group cooperation, and expanded self-efficacy in graduate school and/or career related planning.

Learning Goals for the Lab:

1. Develop skill in scientific thinking about behavior and mental processes as evidence by the abililty to :

  • use the technical vocabulary of psychological research
  • understand the difference between scientific and non-scientific evidence
  • analyze and contextualize scientific evidence
  • communicate clearly and concisely in writing and speech, including the ability to organize and interpret information

2. Work effectively in groups

3. Learn to acquire scientific knowledge via the methods of scientific psychology

 

Class activities:

 

Lab 1:

  • 4 groups
  • each group given a question
  • may research the question using any source they want

 

Lab 2:

  • report on their findings
  • Librarian-led session on PsycINFO and types of sources
  • next assignment for groups: find 1 review article and 1 empirical article from peer reviewed journals that answer the original question

 

 

 

 

 

Psych 2400: Research Methods I Syllabus.doc

 

Course goals:

1. understand the scientific nature of the study of psycholgoy and be able to use the terms and concepts of psychological research appropriately.

2. have the necessary skills to conduct research and communicate their findings.

3. be better able to think critically about psychological reasearch and psychological content.

 

Class activities:

 

Lab 1:

  • Librarian, professor, and students work through interesting research question in class
  • Assignment: students complete PsycINFO worksheet

 

Lab 2:

  • students develop a researchable topic of their own
  • review Article Linker (how to find full text)
  • introduce ILLiad - interlibrary loan system
